ForLab PROMYS
A project at the Albert Ludwigs-University of Freiburg
The Freiburg Microelectronics Research Laboratory for Hybrid Integration Technologies is working on medically applicable electronic systems that can measure both biological parameters in patients and environmental influences. The scientists led by Prof. Dr. Gerald Urban from the Institute of Microsystems Engineering IMTEK at the University of Freiburg are aiming to combine electronics, sensors and actuators on a chip in a highly miniaturized form.
The experts are testing new functional materials and a three-dimensional structure. The complex microsystems will initially be used in medicine, for example for autonomous patient monitoring, as an integrated implantable sensor-stimulation chip or as bioanalytical diagnostic systems for virus diagnostics, among other things.
The PROMYS ForLab will create robust microsystems that can be used universally. This is because the researchers do not only see potential applications in medicine. It is also conceivable that they could be used in other areas such as smart homes, agriculture or process technology, which would have a broad economic impact for Germany.
