A project at the Ilmenau University of Technology
More computing power with less energy consumption – that is the goal of the Ilmenau Microelectronics Research Laboratory for Neuromorphic Electronics. To this end, the scientists led by Prof Dr Martin Ziegler at the Ilmenau University of Technology want to develop highly energy-efficient microelectronic circuits for self-adapting systems.
The researchers are working on supplementing the classic Von Neumann architecture, on which all current processors are based, with novel microelectronic circuit architectures that are based on neurobiological paradigms of information processing. To this end, innovative concepts of functional materials in electrical engineering for information storage and processing are to be raised from the realisation of the individual component to a system level.
The Ilmenau scientists are working together with colleagues from the Leibniz Institute for Innovative Microelectronics IHP in Frankfurt/Oder. They are also collaborating closely with Kiel University as part of the DFG-funded research group 2093 ‘Memristive Devices for Neural Systems’.
The researchers want to overcome the limits of today’s microelectronic systems in terms of signal processing speed and energy efficiency. New concepts should make it possible to meet the growing demand for computing power due to the Internet of Things, big data and artificial intelligence, while at the same time massively reducing energy requirements.
